LATEST NEWS - July 2010

Just back from 2 weeks in wonderful Scotland. The first week saw us on the breathtaking Isle-of-Mull for our annual visit - our tenth consecutive year! The second week, we island-hopped to beautiful, tranquil Islay, also not an unfamiliar destination for us.

Mull delivered the usual wildlife wonders and the weather was more-or-less kind to us - although the midges were not!   Sea-eagles and golden-eagles were to be seen every day - as usual, but this year the otters remained elusive until the Thursday - in past years they too have been a daily treat, but then sometimes, it is just down to luck!   On a day-trip to Iona, you could hear them as soon as you disembarked from the ferry - corncrakes! but could you ever see them? (let alone photograph them) - not a chance!   A good close-up view of a golden-eagle chick in it's nest was cut short with the realisation, after scanning the horizon, that one of the parents was sitting on a distant mountain-top, next to what was obviously a carcass of some sort, patiently waiting for us to leave the vicinity - which we did, immediately.   I was a bit disappointed with my close-up shots of a white-tailed sea-eagle, encountered on Loch-na-Keal, they could have been sharper - camera gremlins, I suspect!

Lovely Islay beckoned (pronounced Eye-lah). Again the weather was kind with BIG blue skies and white puffy clouds - very Hebridean and the beaches were almost straight out of the Carribean. An added bonus - virtually no midges!   Wildlife abounds on Islay, but again the otters were elusive with only a distant view of a pair - the seals were everywhere though.   We spotted a pair of choughs and several hen-harriers, but no corncrakes, either seen or heard, this time.   It seems like "Taking Coals to Newcastle", but I am glad we took our own Malt Whisky with us, as prices are now rocketing for "The Water of Life".

Back down to earth now, after another memorable holiday in the Islands.

LATEST NEWS - August 2010

August is here and summer has been a mixed bag so far - let's hope it doesn't just fizzle out like so many recent years.

I don't know about the supposed sharp decline in the house sparrow poulation, my garden is absolutely full of them at the moment (and we live less than 3 miles from a big city-cenre). They seem to have done a good job of breeding this year, I can't keep up with re-filling the seed feeders and fat-ball and fat-square holders.

Those characters, the starlings and their offspring, are just as bad - eating me out of house and home - and what about the noise they make as they squabble over the food!

There are so many blue tits and long-tailed tits on the loose as well - they seem to fly around in large gangs, just like locusts - devouring all before them.

If you are ever in or around Nethy Bridge in Scotland, we are now supplying the Community Centre there with our Greeting Cards. Pop in and see Mel, the Ranger, she will tell you all the best wildlife hotspots and best walks in the area. They are a charity, so please support them if you can.
